5 Big Chop Realizations

In 4 days it will officially have been 4 months since I cut over 40 inches of natural locs and I have realized a couple very important things that I just didn't think about pre-chop:

1. I actually have to comb my hair

2. Hair products, accessories, and tools are EXPENSIVE!

3. It takes waaaaaay more time and maintenance than my locs ever did

4. My locs were NOT as heavy as I had presumed...guess my head just big lol

5. I use just as much shampoo and conditioner (if not more) as when I had ridiculously long hair.

What are some of your hair discoveries after making a big change?

How did you adjust?

AHOMH FASHION FOCUS: Double Bun W/Mini Fro

I had my first photoshoot since the cut about a week later and had to come up with a style that would be edgy enough to shoot in but that would work with my new short tresses. Since the front is a lot longer than the back, I found the perfect compromise.
So I parted the front half of my hair down the middle and put it in ponytails. Then, I used some of my locs to wrap around the ponytails. I told you I was gonna make natural weaves a thing! lol. Anyway, so I then brushed the hair down and around the locs to create two full buns!

I really liked the look with the back twisted up into the buns, but the photographer of Live Life Wise Photography wanted the baby fro in the back to flourish so I left it out. The pictures came out great! I even braided the other model's hair too...yall know I can't braid, but I did my best:

STYLE ALERT: Flat-twisted Fro

I'm really still getting used to having short hair...but I wanted to show you guys like one of my first attempts at styling since the cut...I'm happy with the result.

I didn't need anything new to achieve the style than what I had been using before, so already that made me happy. Basically I just flat-twisted the front until about a third of the way up my head and put the ends in two-strand twist bantu knots.

Then I combed out the back and put those in two-strand twist bantu knots as well....This was a pretty difficult feat since the hair is SO short back there.
After I got it all up, I wrapped my hair until morning. When it was time to get ready for the day, I just took down the bantu knots and finger picked my hair until I got the shape that I wanted! Here are some side, top, and back views:

Then, of course, I used my hair toothbrush to define my edges and voila, a look!
I kept it up for about 3 days. It would have lasted longer, I think, but I had to take it down because I needed to restyle my hair for a photoshoot I had that week. I can't wait to try it again and leave it up a little longer to see how long a life it has.

Style Alert: Braided updo with Curls

So I know that already posted this week, but I just Loved my hair SO much Monday that I had to do a Style Alert for it...and I couldn't wait until next week because my Halloween themed makeup would be a little outdated by then haha.

Here's the look!

What I did was part my hair down the middle from the back and braided upward toward the front of my head. When I got near the very front, I left a little hair out on both sides and continued the plait. I then took the two plaits and crossed them over one another and secured them into the braids with a bobbypin. I used foam rollers (I'll be posting about these a little later!) to roll the front bangs and took them down in the morning for some fun curls! :)

And voila, style complete:

The People's Response 💇

So it has officially been a month since I publicly announced the news of my natural big chop and the "crowd went wild" so to speak. Haha. I wanted to share those responses with yall:

Many people commented on social media, texted me, called, me and face-timed me to make sure it was real, lol. I had, by far, the largest response from Facebook. Shout out to all my Facebook friends for always showing much love! Not only was I showered with lots of awesome bday wishes and picture likes, I was also loaded with comments on my new look:

For the most part, I got rave reviews and positive feedback. Only a couple people expressed sadness for me having cut it, but WAY less than I expected! Everyone was so supportive....and mostly super surprised.

The best thing though, is still getting "you look so different all the time with your hair!" comments....even from people who didn't know me before the cut. That was one of the things I worried about...not being able to still switch it up and keep my hairstyles interesting now that I have short hair. But, I have proved to myself that I can still "do it up" (pun intended)!

Anyway, thanks to everyone for your continued support and encouragement! See you next week :)

What were some of the best comments you got when you did the big chop?
What were some of the craziest comments you got when you did the big chop?
How much did you feed into other people's opinion about your cut!?
