AHOMH Has Tumblr!

A Head of My Hair has had a tumblr for a few months now, but I realized that probably not a lot of people know about it, so just thought I should write about it here to let you all in on the "secret"!

The tumblr is mostly an array of pictures at the moment with descriptive captions to let you know what's going on. As some of you may know, I LOVE doing nail designs and change up my nails pretty frequently. I wanted to create a platform to share my designs so decided that a tumblr was a cool place to do that. Thus "Nailart & Natural Hair" was born! I share my favorite photos of my nail art as well as great hair designs that I love.

Here's my latest Christmas nail art (I've done 3 different designs already so far and this probably won't be the last lol) where I tried the water marbling technique for the first time:

So if you love cool nail art and want to get some "hairspiration" through awesome natural hair/locked hair styles, checkout and follow AHOMH's new tumblr: http://rahkuanailshair.tumblr.com and share it with your friends!

Here are a couple more designs I've experimented with that you can look forward to seeing on the blog now or in the future :)

What are your favorite nail polish brands?

What sites do you go to for hair and nail design inspiration?

Do you have a tumblr you want me to follow!?

STYLE ALERT: LA Runway Barrel Roll Buns

I always have a great time ripping the runway. There's a certain exhilaration that comes with strutting down a long narrow path on 6in heels in beautiful clothes. FASHION. :)

This year's LAFW LA Runway was held at Arena Hollywood in the ever lively West Hollywood area.  I walked for about 6 different designers and changed my hair up a bit for each. My favorite of the night was probably my barrel-rolled, double side bun with geometric flat twisted front. (I've noticed the barrel rolls are SO versatile and I love using them for so many things).

Here's the look from a few different angles:

I wore the double bun style for Nichole Walla's Darling Nikki lingerie/burlesque line:

And also for LaRae Mychรจl's elegant yet edgy line:

All in all, the show was amazing and was very heavily attended. I can't wait to drum up a new style for next season!

STYLE ALERT: Shorter Loc Knots!

Every Thursday on AHOMH's YouTube Channel, natural hair ideas, tips, thoughts, styles, etc. are the topic of discussion. This past Thursday I wanted to show my Thanksgiving hair look, so I talked about the shorter loc knots that I had decided to try out: "Thanksgiving Curls! Trying Out Shorter Loc Knots".

I talked about loc knots in a previous blog post, but I've been wanting to test out a shorter version for the longest time for several reasons: One, just to see if I could do it; two, to see how I'd look with even shorter hair; and three, to see if I could get a longer lasting and more prominent curl.

As I said in the video, I don't think I got very much more curl…and after having it up for about a week now, I think it's safe to say they last about as long. But I did find one important difference in favor of the shorter loc knots! (And it's definitely not in the styling, because that was a nightmare! haha). It's that the curls start higher up on the strands.

With the normal length that I do, the curls I get when the loc knots are taken down are awesome but they start like midway down my head while leaving the top portion a little flat. With the shorter loc knot, I noticed that I didn't have that flatness problem because the curls started very close to the root of each strand vs. the middle. That's a GREAT improvement.

In general, I don't think that the inconvenience of the styling while the loc knots are up is worth the higher starting curl, but I do see myself alternating between lengths every now and then.

Have you tried a shorter loc knot length than your norm?

Try it out and share your results!

FEATURED: Tamika Lee of NaturalLee Me

This month's featured naturalista is a Delaware native who has been natural for almost 10 years. Say hello to Tamika!

WHO IS Tamika?

Tamika is a natural beauty fashionista that loves to be creative with her hair & her style. She started her natural hair journey the summer of 2005 almost by accident... After a year of no chemicals, her hair was the shiniest and healthiest it had been in years! From that moment on, she knew it was the "natural choice" for her (pun intended).

Tamika shares her tips for hair and fashion on her personal YouTube and also hosts an awesome page with her sister: "Sisters With Purpose". She's been completely natural since 2007, and has had no direct heat since 2009.

48 Hour Stage Show…and My Thoughts on "NORMAL"

This weekend I got a chance to act on stage after not having done so for a long while. I LOVE the stage, and I really missed that adrenaline rush and satisfaction you get from doing a play. I know, I know, I'm on stage all the time with my singing, but it's a really big difference between the two despite all the similarities.

I-N-S-A-N-E Music Video!

This weekend I shot a music video for my Love, Loss, Lies song: I-N-S-A-N-E! In 2 days I had around 8 wardrobe changes at 6 locations, with 4-6 different makeup looks, and lots of awesome HAIR!

STYLE ALERT: Loc Knots

This is one of my favorites but I don't wear it as often because of the time and effort commitment it takes to achieve. Be prepared to devote like 1.5 - 3 hours on this one!

Let's Set the Record Straight...

So I straighten my hair from time to time (I've probably done it like 5-8 times at most in 25 years…). I have no issues with putting heat on my hair, I just rarely do it because it takes too much time and hassle for something that doesn't last very long and doesn't make much of a difference for most of the styles I gravitate toward more often. BUT, I still do it from time to time just to keep it interesting and continue showing the diversity of natural hair.

Transformation Tuesday!

There's a weekly social media hashtag that I wanted to use for this week's post: #TransformationTuesday. It basically calls for a pictorial demonstration of what you used to look like compared to where you are now. My hair (and pretty much everything about me) has grown so very much that I thought it was worth it to share the experience.

I Am NOT My hair!

One of my favorite songs is "I Am Not My Hair" by the soulful India Arie. It just expresses exactly how I feel about the whole hair issue: my hair does not define me. It is only an extension of me and my beauty is determined not by what I do with it but rather how I view what I have done with it. PERCEPTION is key here. If your self worth is dictated by a physical change to your image then your set of evaluation tools definitely need to be reexamined.

Trying Something New #AHOMHairFAIL

Whether you wear it natural, relaxed, straight, curly, wrapped, locked etc., we women (and I'm sure the men too) know that sometimes when you try new things with your hair….it just DOESN'T work! We've all had those "bad hair days" when our hair just doesn't seem to want to obey the physical instructions we give.

Well, I know I show a lot of what DOES work for me, so this week I wanted to show a little peak of something I tried out that just failed miserably. Haha. So here goes…

Style Alert: Pompadour

Even before Janelle Monae made it cool (which she does SO well), I loved to rock the pompadour. It looks trรจs cool and gives some major volume and dimension to your hair!

(here's a sort of side swept pomp)

I thought the word pompadour was a little funny sounding so I wanted to see where it came from…apparently King Louis XV had a mistress named
